What is electricity market settlement?
In the electricity market, the production and use of electricity should always be balanced. There are electricity market participants called Balance Responsible Parties that help to create the balance in the electricity market and grid. Each balance responsible party must plan their operations and strive to maintain this balance. But in practice, there will always be deviations from the plans; these deviations are called imbalances. eSett calculates imbalances for each Balance Responsible Party (BRP) and makes sure each party is paid and invoiced correctly.
There are also market participant called Balancing Service Providers (BSP) that offer reserve products to maintain the balance and support electricity grid. eSett invoices the compensation of some of these services provided by the Balancing Service Providers in the Nordic market.
A list of active BRPs and BSPs in the Nordic electricity market is available on our Public Data portal.
eSett’s settlement principles are based on a harmonized model throughout the Nordics, so the operating conditions are the same for all Balance Responsible Parties. This increases competition and brings efficiency on the Nordic markets. We are indirectly helping to make electricity market operations more efficient to the benefit of the electricity consumers in our settlement countries.
