As a forerunner in providing advanced services in the Nordic energy markets, eSett has committed to constant sustainability improvement. The company has done a lot, and one thing is for sure: eSett has not chosen to do things the easy way. eSett has an important role as an enabler of the green transition in the energy markets.

eSett is a forerunner in providing advanced services in the cross border Nordic energy markets. As climate change mitigation needs all hands on deck, eSett has already integrated sustainability into its core business.

To mitigate its environmental, social, and economic impact, the company has committed to constant improvement. In 2021, eSett published a Sustainability section on its webpage for stakeholders. With the help of Finnish climate expertise company, Clonet Oy, eSett identified the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on which it can have the biggest impact. It turned out, that nine out of 17 SDGs are linked to eSett’s business. Implementing the goals directs the business, corporate responsibility initiatives and prepares the company for the energy transition. Clonet helped eSett to communicate the results in the new annual review, which was published in 2021.

Through its services, eSett promotes the availability of affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), industry, innovation and infrastructure (SDG 9), and climate action (SDG 13). eSett has also recognized that it is responsible to promote good health (SDG 3), gender equality (SDG 5), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), reduced inequalities (SDG 10), responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), and peace, justice and strong institutions (SDG 16).

As a part of the emission reductions and carbon neutrality project, the company decided to determine its carbon footprint (scope 1, 2, and 3) according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Corporate Standard. The carbon footprint was calculated for the base year 2020 and for 2021. Clonet helped eSett to identify its emission sources, it collected and verified the emission sources and determined the carbon footprint based on the Standard. The results were used to identify the most effective ways to cut emissions and to find ways for carbon neutrality.

eSett’s carbon footprint is very low compared to the company’s turnover. The most significant emission sources are ICT related services. In order to reduce these emissions, eSett has set environmental procurement criteria and favors carbon-neutral service providers or encourages the service providers to seek the same carbon neutral goals.

The energy sector is a key player in climate change mitigation and global energy transition is already in progress. This means, that the share of carbon neutral energy is constantly increasing, and wind and solar power are taking over fossil-based energy sources. This means ambitious goals and concrete actions are needed. Even though eSett’s emission reduction and carbon neutrality goals are ambitious, it is needed to accelerate the whole industry towards a global energy transition.
